Darkness Falls After Twilight: What do you think?

I was flying from Connecticut to Little Rock Thursday and had some time to read the entire USA Today newspaper. Something that caught my attention was the list of the nation’s best-selling books.  The first four were the four books of the Twilight series. And then I noticed that the soundtrack from the upcoming Twilight movie entered the Billboard charts this week at the #1 position, ahead of the much touted AC/DC album. That's impressive!

What is the deal with these books?  What is the attraction?  Is it a good thing or a bad thing? I simply do not believe that anything is just neutral.....it's either leaning toward good, or leaning toward bad, to some degree.   I would love to hear your thoughts.  I wanted to know what was being said about them from a Christian perspective, so I went to Plugged In Online to see if there was a review.  Sure enough, there was, and here is the link:

Review on the Twilight Series from Plugged In Online

I hope you will take some time to read the review.  I'm glad I did.

Oh, my! I read a bit from the link you provided and it made me feel ill. I agree w/ you that all entertainment sources will either represent light or darkenss. These books I believe come from a dark source and should be avoided. As, a Christaian we aren't to be entertained by evil, which is a bit of a challenge in this fallen world. That is why we must seek the Lord in all matters, esp. what we choose to fill our gates w/. These are the days we ask for an extra measure of discernment concerning what has access to influence our families. There is a lot of deception and grey btwn good and evil these days. Sadly, a lot of "Christians" unknowingly entertain themselves w/ evil b/c they are just following the crowd. The Lord speaks to us about this issue as well as others, but we are often so connected to the world that His voice is not given any credit. How sad. That's my 2 cents.

Hope Greyson is running around in the fullness of health. We love you Ward people and feel so blessed to know you! You all are for sure a reflection of His glory. Christa and Family

Thanks, Christa, for your thoughts.  Grayson is much better now, but we are watching what he eats closely.  Thanks for asking, and for all your prayers.  We love the Marshbanks family, too!

Well for some reason I've missed the buzz concerning this book. Your comments were the first. Just wanted to let you know how cool God is....and how very thankful Im that you educated me. Immediately after reading the book review on pluggedIn....Grace approached me and asked if she could read book. I was able to give her an educated NO.

We had already decided No to the book after it came into our home from another child a couple of months ago. A friend who just returned to the states from 8yrs in Thailand gave me these words to use with others on this subject.

Guys thoughts are: For those who think the "Twilight" books (as well as any other of the dark-romance/ forbidden-fruits genre) and the movie are all just a love story; remember the frog in the pot being brought to a boil. If you are considering allowing your daughter, or yourself, to read this kind of "sexual-less" fantasy, spend a few minutes with Mr. Google and research the origins of vampires, incubi and succubae and then reconsider. The spiritual risks of dabbling with the netherworld and demons, even in fictional stories, are more that we can know. Be very careful of what you let your kids read, as well as yourself! If you choose to indulge, at least do so being fully informed about what you are filling and entertaining your mind with. It just seems like there are too many other better things to spend our time and money on.

Spiritual Darkness (Demons) is harder to see in a country/culture where the unseen world has been mostly reasoned away by science. In Philippians 4:8, Paul tells us to think on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy. These stories, Twilight, are based on a vivid dream a woman had where a vampire boy and normal girl were discussing the issues of a relationship between them and how the vamp boy had a hard time resisting the urge to kill the girl and drink her blood right there on the spot. Can we who claim to follow Jesus hold that up against Phil 4:8?

Peace to you each. Love, The Fitts
